The French Government has withdrawn the ban on the commercialization of polystyrene packaging and styrene copolymers, originally set to take effect on January 1, 2025, and introduced under Article 23 of the 2021 Climate and Resilience Law. This decision comes in response to requests from industry associations, which pointed out the inconsistency of the regulation with the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
The dialogue between companies, institutions, and regulatory bodies proved crucial in avoiding negative impacts on the industry. It ensured that packaging meeting existing recyclability standards can continue to be marketed until the European Commission issues definitive design-for-recycling criteria, expected by 2028.
The withdrawal of the ban underscores the importance of environmental policies that not only aim for sustainability but are also tailored to the realities of production. Polystyrene stands out as a smart material, adaptable to any requirement in terms of shape, performance, recovery, and recycling after use.
